PRODUCERS GUIDE | CREW JOB
DESCRIPTIONS
Note: It is the producer's responsibility to decide how
many people will be involved in the production to successfully
complete the program. (Producer needs 6 persons minimum)
PRODUCER - "The Organizer" This
person puts the business end of the program together. Gets
legal rights to scripts, hires and fires the director and
crew, arranges permits and clearances for shoots, is liaison
with guest and talent, arranges editing time and controls
distribution. Has final responsibility for the program and
final word on the content.

DIRECTOR - This person decides which
camera angles to take and directs crew members to perform
tasks at his/her command. Usually has some say in selection
of the crew. Rehearses talent, selects camera angles, sets
the mood of scene lighting, special effects, etc. Determines
if a "take" is acceptable.

FLOOR DIRECTOR - The floor director
is an extension of the director in the control room. This
person directs the host and guests on the studio floor including
cueing talent, keeping pace of the program, handles problems
that occur before and during taping. Keeps communication
flowing between the director in the control room and the
studio floor. This person also is responsible for safety
on the studio floor.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (TD) - The Technical
Director obeys the directions of the Director to actually
push buttons and fader bars on the video switcher. The TD
is ultimately responsible for the overall smooth technical
operations of all equipment. The TD should check a checklist
prior to each shoot.

AUDIO OPERATOR - This person operates
all audio related devices including the audio mixing board,
microphones, cassette deck, videotaped audio sources and
the compact disc player. Works closely with the floor director
on placement of microphone, calibrates all audio sources
going through the audio mixing board and properly adjusts
levels during the taping.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR (AD) - This person
assist the director in keeping track of the remaining segment
times during the taping of the production. May write rough
script drafts or interview questions. Gets releases signed.
Confirms each crew member's job is going smoothly. If not,
may asking others to assist in smoothing out the problem.
Occasionally will continue to check on the crew readiness
status and report such status to the director. Performs other
duties as assigned.

CAMERA OPERATOR - This person is
responsible for the set-up, operation and proper stowage
of the camera and camera cables. Should collaborate with
the Director prior to the start of the shoot to understand
what will happen in the scene and the effect the director
wants to achieve. Should communicate any foreseeable logistical
problems to the Director. Listens to the director. Relays
camera problems which may occur during the shoot to the floor
director.

VTR OPERATOR - This person records
the program. Starts and stops the VTR on the director's command.
Monitors video and audio levels and verifies the actual recording
on the VTR. Cues and plays roll-ins when applicable. Keeps
track of time in the absence of the AD. Labels tapes and
tape cases prior to the shoot.

CHARACTER GENERATOR OPERATOR (CG) -
This person types titles and credits in to the computer per
the Director's request. Verifies the accuracy of the spelling
of the host's, guest's and crew's names and their professional
titles. Uses business cards for verification when possible.
Keeps a written list of which information appears on each
CG page.
